For bad connections to the sewer pipe, try using a rubber doughnut. I use toss-ins from Walmart to keep the wife happy, but I can't smell a flowery odor or anything worse, which means things are working as they should.

I've considered the GEO method, and I'm sure it works, but it seems like a lot of time/money to invest for something that is not a problem. As the MOD suggested, use a wand to clean out the tank.
