My guess is your exhausted from cranking the handle up and down and your not raising the hitch high enough to take the weight off the bars. That leads to increased torq on the latches which makes them harder to turn. I normally run on link #10 when towing hooking and unhooking is easy, but on occasion when I get on a un-level spot or in a bind the latches require more effort. Then they make a loud popping sound as the chain comes out of the bracket.
