On the Passat, they designed the front of the car to slide out on rods for clearance.I just removed it and let it hang but you can't do it without moving the whole front assembly out. The engine sit the "correct way" in the car. The water pump is ran by the timing belt and it's a PITA to keep the marks lined up on this DOHV engine without the special tools they will sale ya.LOL!
The Beetle Is a transverse engine that also runs the water pump off of the timing belt. The motor mount has to come out and the inner fender. This is the same side the turbo piping and innercooler are located. If you haven't seen under the hood of one of these things you don't know what you are missing. HAhA. I believe they design the car around the engine.:S
