After towing my current TT 1400 miles this summer I have no reason to believe this motor, chassis, and transmission will not handle a 12k lb 5th wheel comfortably. The added weight does not effect the towing performance of a vehicle nearly as much as wind resistance.
What many folks over-look is the payload. A fifth wheel will typically put 20% or more of its weight on the pin, in your case, 2,400 plus pounds. The pin weight quickly consumes the available payload of the vehicle. A 2500 is great for bumper pulls but when you get in to fifth wheels, with little exception, you are in the 3500 territory with 4,000 pound payload ratings.
His payload is more like 3400 with a 6500 lb RAWR.
