If it were only IR it wouldn't be a problem.
Infrared light is one type of light that is invisible to us. Gamma rays, X-rays, ultraviolet light, microwaves and radio waves are other types of invisible light. All of these rays and waves are the same type of electromagnetic energy.
If it's being used a a switch for visible light... it's the visible light that pollutes. IR is NOT the problem.
Many of the municipalities in certaian parts of the country have their lights pointed down on street lights and parking lots... none of the light expanding or pointing up. Calif, AZ are notible.
As far as outside lights going on and off... do you rally think it scares the home invaders off... when the lights come on your neighbors turn their backs...just like they do when they hear car alarms going off... The deer arent afraid of your lights... the boogie man will get you anyway... no one will notice. Some neighbor hoods hear so much shooting they quit looking... they just duck and cover.
Next we'll see MH's with bars on the windows... We thought we'd seen one and were laughing about it... as we got closer we saw that it was a prison bus... all shinny and new... even had a place for the sewer hose to connect. If it can keep the criminals in then it should keep the booger man out.

My goodness... is there really any possibility of just carring a flash light pointed down and out of your neighbors eyes and windows as a courtesy just like you did for many years.
