wow! im so happy i found this forum - thanks for your help. since this is so new to us, I didn't quite know what to do with this situation. There is another place we can take it to right across the street, its coincidentally the same place that passed inspection on it in 2009 so we may take it there.
My first thought was also to just cut it off - I'll keep y'all updated - my husband is going tomorrow to check it out.
