Need help selecting new Travel Trailer

I'm about to spend my retirement traveling around the USA in a TT. I want it to be brand spanking new. I'm confounded by the lack of brand selection here in the New Jersey/New York area. It seems all I can find are Heartlands and Colemans. Neither impress me. My Toyota 4runner is rated to tow 4700 lbs. I will be traveling solo. I cannot afford an Airstream. I've not received responses from Casita or Scamp. Why are the most alluring TT's built way the heck out west ? Thanks to anyone who can advise me.
  • Since you mentioned Casita, have you looked into Escape: Escape TTSince you need something light weight because of your tow vehicle, you might look at LivinLite as well

It's important to understand that Casita and Scamp are two of the very, very few egg-type trailers, and even something like the Winnie in the previous post is a completely different category of trailer. So part of your issue is that you've selected a truly tiny category that includes some manufacturers without a traditional dealer network. I don't know why you haven't had a response from the manufacturers, but if you mean a response to email, then you might try calling.

As for why RVs are built "out west", the northeast, and NY/NJ particularly, isn't generally considered the most business-friendly, lowest-cost climate for manufacturing.
  • "Out West" has several meanings, particularly for an East Coaster. As a former East Coaster, I knew a lot of New Yawkers who considered anything over the Hudson "out west"! But a solution may be closer than you think.

Indiana. It's the self proclaimed RV capital of the USA. In the Elkhart area alone there's a bunch of manufacturers. I have in-laws in the Fort Wayne area and near their summer home up in the lake area of NE Indiana, there's more than a few in the Lagrange area. Check out this site as some potentials for ya.

    Elkhart IN Manufacturers
  • Same issue with the Lance - they're made in California. CharlieWhiskey, you may be on to something about going direct to the manufacturers. It could well be worth the drive. With your vehicle's weigh limit, it does limit your choices. Another possibility you could consider is the Chalet - it's a "a-shaped" small trailer, but one model of Chalet has a bump-up section so you can stand at the kitchen counter. Perhaps you've got a dealer not quite as far away who deals with them? Good luck!
  • Thanks for your response djgarcia. The issue here in NJ is as you suggest. I will have to shop out west for the TT I'm looking for. I haven't received a response as yet, after three days, from either Scamp or Casita. Perhaps I'm too anxious. I am so confident in the quality of those trailers, I would be willing to drive out to Backus, MN (Scamp) or Rice, TX (Casita) and hook 'er up and tow 'er away.
  • The weight your can tow will limit the number of manufactures that can meet your RV needs. Your on the right track with Casita and Scamp. Scampi makes a great little 5th. wheel but I am also impressed with the Casita RV's. Have you tried calling them to get information? Also just do a search for "light weight trailers". Seach for RV dealers in Tualitin, Sherwood or Hillsboro Oregon. There is one dealer who specializes in nothing but light weight trailers. Sorry I can't remember the exact name.
