So you tried to buy a TC 18 years ago and have been contemplating it ever since?
Anyway, yeah you could haul a mid size camper. Like a small hard side "ok", if you knew what you were doing and did a fair number of mods to the truck. But given your lack of experience, I wouldn't reccomend putting anything bigger than a popup on that truck.
There's a reason it has 3klbs payload. Because it's so light, like a 1/2 ton truck.
There are several key differences between a heavy half and a 3/4 ton. Namely, frame axles and springs are lighter duty. Most notably the rear axle.
Honestly, if you want a full featured camper, I'd look for a minimum, real 3/4 or 1 ton truck.
Or do a bunch of mods to your truck and have a marginal camper hauler.
This coming from someone who hauls a 4000lb + camper on a 3/4, so I'm telling you this because I understand the mechanical abilities and limitations of trucks quite well.
