Need help with stubborn mildew.

I have a Rockwood HW277 tent trailer and I’m trying to remove a stubborn mildew stain with commercial products with no success. I also have a small grease spot I can’t take out. I scrubbed so much the canvas is starting to shred.

I’m sure that with all the experience on this forum, someone has a homemade solution for me. I’m getting quite discouraged.

  • Please do NOT use bleach or bleach-based products on the canvas and vinyl portions of your PUP. While it may kill the spores at the surface level, it will not ultimately remove all of it, plus you have the added but more serious issue of accelerating the deterioration of the vinyl. The mold will be more likely to return since bleach does not penetrate into the material as deeply as mold does.

I have used Iosso Mold and Mildew Stain Remover with great success. It is designed to work on these materials without damaging them. Without the odor issues of bleach, it is safe to work with in enclosed spaces. It is biodegradable and non-toxic.

It has worked on my vinyl awning and the interior side of my previous PUP's vinyl, which is what you have on your PUP.

You might be able to find Iosso locally but I had to order it. I don't recall if it was from the link above. I don't know if it will work on the grease but I haven't used it for that purpose and can't verify it personally even though they claim it will.
  • Moved to Folding Trailers from General RVing Issues at request of OP
  • dawn dishwashing liquid for the grease & mold/mildew remover from the walmart boat section
  • komodo, i think you'd get better responses in the Folding Trailer forum, since that's where all the popup owners are and they would be the experts on canvas mildew.

Have you used x-14? It has worked for me for mildew stains on tile in the past. Takes a lot of elbow grease but it does work.

Also I've never tried it but bleach should kill the mildew and will prob remove the stain.

X-14 is what I've used to easily clean mildew off the vinyl on our pontoon boat. Leaves behind a pale brown stain instead of black - but it will bleach the color from fabrics, so use carefully!!
  • bleach...there is a foamy bleach out now that I've found to work around the house MUCH better than anything else. I used straight bleach on an old 35 foot housetrailer back in the 60s (yes, I was trailer trash) when I found the one tiny closet was FULL of mold....... Use the bleach, turn a fan on it to dry and air everything out. Oh, using the bleach should mean you don't have to scrub.....so it shouldn't damage the covering. Spray it on and let it sit for about 10 minutes.
