It does not need to be dual stage, it just needs to be able to lower the pressure from the tank to approx 11" wc for the trailer. Some regulators can do that single stage, some require dual stage. The important part to remember is that it must be able to bleed off enough pressure in case of failure to prevent rupture of any of the trailer piping or appliances.
