Need new tires

I need new tires for my 3/4 ton Silverado (see my signature). Looking for recommendations for both towing and for general use. LT 245 75/R17E. I am usually towing approx. 7000-9000 lbs.

With diesel fuel approaching $6/gallon in my area I won’t be towing too far from from home anytime soon. Because of that I am not willing to pay top $$$ for the best tires anymore. My goal now is to be safe and to not get stranded somewhere.

Your helpful thoughts are appreciated.

  • Thanks much for the serious answers, especially from south of here in BlackDiamond. I appreciate it.

I’m just looking for a “square” deal.

I thought you needed square tires for those square fender cut outs on GMs.

Grit and Cummins12V need those for their dodges.....ooops....errrr ram thingies ma bobs!

Ford's use triangles with tracks on them....

Or so I've been led to believe.....

  • On a budget, or just plain economical, first try CL or FB classifieds for takeoffs. Presuming for tires only, you want to stay with smallish tires (since you're currently running the smallest pizza cutters possible), 245 75s or 265 70s are what you're after.
Or for the same or less $ than new tires, new takeoffs on the rim in 17, 18 or 20" sizes.

The selection ain't what it used to be, thanks covid and Brandon, but still deals out there and generally pretty good deals as your size is not very popular or in demand in the consumer market (which is what CL and FB will be).

If you're the kind of fella that can't sleep at night knowing you didn't pop your tire's cherry yourself, then I've had great luck with Kumho and Hankook tires on the bargain side of tire pricing.
