Need tips and experiences for first time winter camping.

DW, Spaz the cat, and I plan to take the TC out during the last week of the year up here in Minnesota for some cold weather winter camping.

The Plan: Head to an open State parks with electricity, maybe hitting wineries along the way for tastings. Also may find a casino parking lot to overnight in.

The Rig: 2005 Lance 981 Max. 2 deep cycle batteries, 2 30# LP tanks built in Onan generator. Winter package including heated basement. Currently resides in a heated garage.

Some Concerns: Not winterizing the water lines. We could winterize and just have a jug of water for flushing the toilet.
Not having electricity. We have a genny but not keen on running it 24/7 to keep the rig warm. I do not think the batteries will keep the furnace going through the night w/out charging them with the generator, and I am not sure how long the LP will last. Also finding an open dump station in the winter, but least of my concerns.

So, I am looking to hear some advice and experiences some of you have had when it comes to winter camping. Maybe some do's and dont's.

Much appreciated, Ben

  • Cover the skylights with either reflectix or closed cell foam same for the glass on the back door, I do my windows too at night. that will really reduce the heat loss from the TC and minimize the furnace cycling on and off. Secondly pack the area around the dump valve controls with fiberglass insulation as that is a major route for cold air to 1: freeze the valves and 2: let cold air up under the shower pan and into the basement. Leave all the inside cabinet doors open at night to allow warm air around the plumbing. I also put insulation behind the external storage compartment doors to keep in the heat and keep out the cold. I also add antifreeze into both the grey and black holding tanks to prevent freezing. I drain my fresh tank and use 3.5 gallon water jugs for my fresh water needs. Flannel Sheets and thick down comforters are nice, some folks use winter sleeping bags. Don't keep the TC too warm at night, I have it on low and it doesnt drop befow 58 while I sleep which conserves propane.
