Must have been really early days. A heat pump is essentially an air conditioner running in reverse. We have had nothing but heat pumps in our house since 1984 and it cools the house in the summer and heats it in the winter. It might kick in the auxiliary heating element in temps below 25. And that was not new even back then.
well i've had Heat pumps (misnamed) since 76 and they suck. put out 85 degree air when on pump which feels cool when it blows on you. my first one was a Lenox HP83111 (IIRC) which had about a 90% failure rate in a subdivision in VA.
tell that fella in the Lemon house how wonderful they are.
