New 2015 3500HD Silverado trip report

We just pulled our new Chevy & 5th wheel from Kansas to South Dakota to Washington state, going through the Tetons & Yellowstone. This is our first diesel & our first truck. It has been flawless! The tow-haul mode and diesel exhaust brake were great in difficult mountain situations (lots of construction to go with the 6-6 1/2 grades). We are also happy with how quiet the engine is. We are about 12 1/2 mpg towing for the most part and are happy with that.

Don't the new diffs have a fill to line?

I don't know how it could be seen but the 05 is 4 qts and that is to the bottom of the fill hole. I could only drain 3 qts out of ours after we arrived home from the winter but installed 4qts as the manual called for. PS I am not telling anybody what to do with their trucks.

What size trailer are you pulling? 12 1/2 MPG is great.

I have a 2015 Silverado 3500 SRW 4x4 Duramax on order, should be here in about three weeks. I will need to get my hitch installed as soon as it comes in as we have a trip planned at the end of Aug. I won't have much time to put many miles on it prior to towing. What did your dealer tell you concerning the break-in period prior to towing?

I would like to tell to check the rear end fluid. It could be low about one quart. It is your truck so I will just suggest doing this because our 05 needed one qt to bring it to the proper level of 4 quarts. I asked the dealer to check it and it was written down as doing so. It didn't happen so I towed home from Az thinking it was done. I am not thinking it was bad because it was a cool tow. Just sayin

No towing for the first 500 miles according to the manual.

  • Congratulations on the new truck and trailer!

Glad to hear that you had a great trouble free trip, and getting 12.5 MPG is a bonus!
