I am of the belief that 1/2 tons are light duty pickups, for light duty use. Small towing, light loads, etc.. If you want a pickup to do any decent towing and hauling get a 3/4 ton or bigger, simple as that.
Many, many, many people overload their 1/2 tons and it's downright scary what some people do with them (not that HD pickup owners don't, I just see more overloaded 1/2 tons around here). So part of my stance is based on what I see on the road, get a HD pickup to do HD pickup jobs.
It's just my opinion on 1/2 tons, it doesn't mean people don't have a need for them it just means I think too many people try to make 3/4 tons out of them.
So yes, if your primary questions when shopping for a pickup are about towing and payload then I think you should start at a 3/4 ton.
