New Aluminum body F-150 to come with 2.7L Ecoboost!

They will keep the 360 HP 3.5L and are adding a newer and smaller 2.7L Ecoboost that in testing was getting 30 MPG!

Here is a link about the new truck, being shown today at the auto show.

The 2015 F-150 will have a curb weight about 700 pounds less than the 2014 model. This is 70 pounds less in the steel chassis, and more by changing to the aluminum body.

Fred.
  • I think that's great. It's a perfect combination for the F150's greatest demographic, the grocery-getter. No joke. I think it's silly that trucks continuously market for the 10% of actual truck users at the expense of highest volume users.

By having a very fuel-effecient offering for the non-towing crowd, it means Ford can continue to offer the high-power configurations for those who need it.

I am not surprised by the demise of the 6.2L. Take rate was really low, much lowering than expected, having been cannibalized by EcoBoost sales.

Hennessy offers an EcoBoost-Raptor package, and the reviews were very positive compared to the standard 6.2L Raptor.

The last aluminum truck I drove,M1008 HMMV,was pretty tough.

M1008 was the CUCV, and it was all steel.

I also found this little blurb...

    Interesting...

    And I am keeping track..

Toyota was 1st. F-150 appears to be second. Wonder who will take 3rd place.

GM was second then retracted because Ford wouldn't play ball.

  • It is a risk. A turbo 2.7 liter in a aluminum F 150. I think that if the 2.7 engine is running hard or just harder it will negate much of the economy. Just a question to those with ecoboost V6 F 150's....when do you get the best MPG ? When driving solo do you have to feather the throttle to reach advertised MPG's ?

I'm no hot rodder, but tend to drive a bit hard...open the throttle every so often....for a driver with these characteristics which is probably not untypical for many on this forum...does the MPG take a sizeable dip if your spinning those turbos a bit ?

Light weight is important...acceleration, braking, braking, MPG.

But also other factors affect MPG, such as so-so aerodynamics, typical of any full size pickup, which will be the same, either with the aluminum or standard F150 body.

I may have missed (probably did :)) how much weight would be reduced with the aluminum vs the standard F 150 ?

It's difficult to give an accurate assessment without seeing some review, actually driving the aluminum F 150 with the 2.7 itself. Maybe it will surprise me.

This maybe a partial dead end....very small engine in a full size (albeit aluminum) pickup...or it may be the truck of the future.

I think there is a balance of hp, torque, engine size, vs weight and intended application. For a full sized vehicle the size of an F 150...I have a nagging feeling that 2.7 liters of engine capacity...even with turbo charging....may not be quite enough capacity. We'll see I suppose and modern engineering continues to amaze me. Might well be the case here too.

Forgot to add....wonder what the dentability will be like with an aluminum body ?

Hood is one thing...having aluminum in more dentable areas..I wonder.
  • I would think the tow ratings would have to drop some. I can't imagine towing an 8000lb 34' TT with an F150 that's 700lbs lighter.
  • I think I will keep my 2014 F-250. I cannot imaging anyone trying to tow a 5er or decent sized TT with a light weight truck. Ok for soccer moms and gardening I guess.
  • I wonder what the tow rating will be with the 2.7 engine, and what the re-rated one will be with the 3.5?
  • ...and no more 6.2L option (except the Raptor I'm assuming).
