Hmmmmm - I'll have to go re-read my Maxcare warranty but I believe it's pretty much an extension of the bumper-bumper factory warranty and I don't recall seeing ball-joints on the list of parts not covered (I would have remembered that!).
I'd certainly pursue the warranty angle - and check around at a couple dealerships. In the end, dealers are private businesses and things can vary A LOT between them.
