2016 Ram 3500 will do 31210 and it's still a class 3 truck unlike the F450 no matter how Ford tries to spin it.
1) There is a BIG difference with the Ram that is rated to tow 31,210 lbs and this F450 that is rated to tow 31,200 lbs. The ONLY Ram truck that is rated to tow that much is a Regular Cab DRW 2WD. The F450 pickup ONLY comes in a Crew Cab DRW 4WD. The same Ram 3500 in a Crew Cab DRW 4WD 30,310 lbs towing.
2) If the F450 is under 14,000 lbs GVWR then it is a class 3 truck per DOT regardless of the badge on the door or what anyone else thinks. There is no law stating that just because it has a 4 on the door then it has to be a class 4 vehicle. Look all SRW 350/3500 trucks prior to 2003. All of the brands 350/3500 SRW trucks were actually class 2B trucks since they were under 10,000 lbs GVWR which is the where what people call a three-quarter ton were back then and today. Same goes for the Titan and Titan XD. There are no numbers on the door yet the Titan is a class 2A (half ton) while the Titan XD is a class 2B truck (three-quarter ton). The badges on the door are just model deviations and the manufacturers can make them mean whatever they want.
Now I will admit that Ford did derate the F450 to give it a lower GVWR (which gave it a lower payload) to get it to fit under 14,000 GVWR after trying to manipulate "optional equipment" to make it fit into a class 3, but I would much rather have a truck that can actually handle more and is derated than one that is rated for more than what it can handle. Either way though, these numbers are just a useless pissing match just so they can say they are "Best in Class".
