My 2013 Duramax was my first diesel experience too. Purchased it in May 2013, currently have ~25K miles on it.
Oil change indicator goes about 7000miles between changes, dealer charged me ~$100 for a oil/filter/lube for the first couple; I did the last one myself and plan to continue that way.
Fuel filter indicator is currently somewhere just under 50%. I'm pretty sure I won't wait to ~50K miles but probably will wait until next spring to change it.
DEF is a 5gal tank, it uses about a gallon per 1000miles. If you buy at an autostore it's ~$13 for 2.5gal. If you buy at a pump at a truckstop it's a lot cheaper (just over $3 per gallon).
Lots of anxiety when I first got the diesel about being different than a gasser. After 1.5yrs I find it all pretty easy and not a big deal. Costs are a little higher, but mileage and pulling are a lot better.
