As Turtle and Peeps pointed out fuel filters don't bypass and should filter to a finer degree than a clean filter. However it is not uncommon to hear people talk about the importance of changing the filter on the Duramax engines regularly such as is suggested in this article. Until I hear a reason that makes sense I change my fuel filters when I notice a lack of power or at about 40,000 miles.
The only reason I can think of frequent fuel filter changing for the Duramax and Powerstroke is the CP4.2 fuel pump. If that thing is starved enough, it will grenade. This pump has earned a reputation for being extremely fragile and its failure mode takes out the injectors with it. This is only applicable to 2011+ Duramaxes (LML) and the newer 6.7 Powerstroke motor. Think similar to VP44 on the older 5.9 Cummins. The tables are flipped and GM and Ford are now on the bad side of the table, while Cummins still uses the Bosch CP3 fuel pump.
