New Duramax Question

I change my fuel filter once a year, which works out to be roughly 10,000 miles +-, and do all my own oil changes when the oil life monitor says its time. Any more often than that and you are just wasting money. 2 1/2 gallons of oil and a filter and about 20 minutes is all it costs me.

Unlike oil filters, fuel filters do not have a bypass system in them.

The more they filter the better they filter (smaller and smaller particle size) until they become restrictive at full fuel flow.

I've not done an oil change on my new truck. Looks like I'll be able to go about 5000 miles though, based upon the readings on the dash and current mileage. As with your family car, every time you change the oil, get the oil filter changed too.

If you are buying brand new, GM (had) a deal going on when I got mine last April, that oil and filter changes are no charge for like the first 50,000 miles or something like it. It was pretty awesome! But they do want the "oil life" down to 25% left or less. My last truck I let it get down to about 3% or 4% and then had the oil and filter changed. It did run a little 5000 miles between changes.

Personally, I'm not so concerned about filter and oil changes, as much as I am concerned about DEF fluid. I freeked out when the warning message came on and said I had only about 150 miles left. We found a GM dealer and I bought the DEF fluid (because we were on the road en-route to a State Park), said my truck should not have needed any for quite a while, so it's possible the dealer we bought it from did not fill it before we took delivery. It's filled now!

THe piezo injectors on the newer trucks don't have near the issues the old Dmax injectors had. Like I said you really want to be up on filter changes in order to not starve the fragile CP4 pump on these trucks. When they let go they grenade and send metal shaving all throughout the fuel system.

Its called by pass! Dirty or clogged filters can bypass dirty fuel oil etc. One chunk of crud past the filter and your injectors are toast to the tune of thousands of dollars/Deutch marks/ euros you name it. It can get expensive in a big hurry. 50 dollars for a new fuel filter is cheap insurance.

Had my fuel filter changed 2 days ago.. Filter was $68.25 and labor was $75. Cost a total of $295 for alignment check, oil and filter change fuel filter change and rotate and balance tires.

Why would a clean filter be easier on injectors than a dirty filter? Could be it is; I just can't imagine why.

Many including myself just change the fuel filter evey 10K mi and don't go by the DIC. Cheap insurance if you ask me. The CP4 high pressure fuel pumps on these new trucks don't like to be starved for fuel and if it goes out your looking at big bucks ($10-12k) to replace your entire fuel system.

Pickup up a fuel filter access door from Mad Jack performance and its pretty easy to change the filter yourself and save some $$ from the stealership.

I also always carry a spare filter with me in my truck.

If your up to it, change the fuel filter yourself and you'll probably save a bundle.
In my case with the Cummins, the dealer charges upwards of $150 to change the FF but I do it for $12 myself and it takes ten minutes.
