FRom what I have read, there are TWo options:
Max Tow, and Max Payload. You need BOTH!
The catch is that for some reason, they are RARE as hens teeth. You won't find one on a dealers lot. Most everyone that has one, special ordered it. And they are expensive to boot..... About the same price as a F250, which are easy to find, and heavier duty.
I agree with needing both max tow and max payload, ie. an HDPP F150 to get the most out of an F150 in towing. And a 164" wheelbase is a big plus too.
However, the balance of your post is inaccurate-
-Costs as much as a 250
-They are as rare as hens teeth
That was not my experience when I went looking for a TV back in July of this year.
Regarding Price:
The MSRP was 39,905.00, after Dealership discount and Ford rebate it was 36,800.00.
I could have gotten more rebate from Ford, but chose the 0.0% financing instead. :)
I did not spend a lot of energy looking for pricing on F250, since this was the truck I wanted for a variety of reasons, but what I did see, I could not get a 250 for that price that also had similar features, payload and mpg.
Regarding being as rare as hens teeth:
There were not a lot of them out there. But 30 minutes on the truck locator at the local Ford Dealership yielded 24 of them in the Exact configuration I wanted. (XLT, SCAB, 164 WB, HDPP, 40/20/40 front, Reverse Sensing System, 101A Group)
I called the Dealership closest to me that had one. Made the deal over the phone and email on Wednesday. Saturday I went and picked it up.
Pretty painless.
We now have over 13,000 miles on it since July. Best truck we've ever owned. (we've had other F150's, a Dodge 2500 Diesel, a F250 Diesel, a few Toyota's, a Nissan, oh, and one Chevy 1500)
Approximately 7,000 of those miles have been towing our trailer. Most relaxed towing I've ever done. Our trailer, loaded, is only 6000 lbs. We have another 800 lbs in the truck (beside the tongue weight).
So we are no where near the payload max of 2600 lbs, nor anywhere near the towing max of 11,800 lbs.
Daily driving ranges between 20-22 MPG on regular.
Towing ranges between 10-12 MPG on regular.
At some point we may get a larger trailer, at that time we'll see how she does with a 9000 lbs loaded trailer.
