Since many F150 buyers want all the fancy bling, like the Lariat or Platinum levels, you sacrifice payload.
Very few are interested in towing a 5th wheel. They're more interested in the luxuries as a daily driver. They don't know how important payload is.
If you want payload capacities of 2000lbs+, it's available with the HDPP. But you'll have to order it.
F150s with the HDPP aren't big sellers for Ford. That's why you don't find them on dealers' lots.
I couldn't find a used one so I settled for a XLT with the Max Tow package. My payload is 1830lbs, which is the best I could find.
It's not that they aren't big sellers for Ford, it's because many dealerships don't order them as normal selling stock, thus the real reason for unicorn like availability.
I sold cars for over 8 years in the DFW, Tx area and the problem is that many dealerships use a individual "expert" who orders their retail stock from a matrix of past sales to determine future inventory. In some cases 5 or 6 different dealerships can use the same guy so this person can have a virtual lock on what is getting offered, especially when he's responsible for ordering 50-75K cars a year for his clients. Their system works great 80% of the time for someone who needs a truck for getting stuff from Home Depot or occasionally pulling a small trailer, but the 20% that needs a truck with true capabilities, then you're either forced to step up to 3/4 & 1T because you'll stand a better chance of finding that on their showroom floor.
If you have someone who won't commit to keeping a few in inventory on a regular basis available for retail sale and a truly dedicated and educated group of salespeople, then it ultimately leads to having to special order to get close to what you want.
