Part of the problem is 1/2 tons are getting so good in terms of power and fuel efficiency, that some are willing to trade a 15% worse economy for 100% increase in towing capacity.
The other part is people insisting trucks looking like "trucks". In Euro / Asia, people are more about economy and practicality over looks.
