I use a 3/4 in copper pipe cleaning brush, that fits in my drill, for cleaning gunk from the anode rod hole threads. Most hardware places have them. I don't replace the anode rod until there is less than half of it remaining. Yes they do look bad, in just a short time. Water quality determines the lifetime.
