Huh, I wonder if they cut back on the additive package like they did with the jump from CI-4 to CJ-4. But it seems like they're going to increase sheer stability and oxidation stability some how. I wonder how they achieve better sheer stability and oxidation. Are the new specs at minimum synthetic blends? I watched the vids and marketing stuff, but no engineering techy geeky stuff for me to take-in *Sigh*, thanks marketing department.
I wonder if any manuals will change to allow using the new FA4 spec that they're starting. I know for transit fleets, Cummins ok's the use of a 10W-30 oil (and the buses average a GVW of 26000 lbs all day when they run due to passenger loads). However I wonder if RAM will allow it. Ford will probably allow FA4 oils since the Powerstroke already has a 10W30 rated oil they recommend. I wonder if GM will also hop on the bandwagon, they've been pushing the 5w20 and 0w20 oils for quite a while as well.
Since our diesel fuel sulfur content has not changed and the emission systems is basically still the same I would think this new CK4 standard builds on the CJ4 rated oil, which has proven to be very good.
What I'm interested in is what is the difference between a CK4 10W30 and a FA4 10W30 in terms of additives. As far as I can tell the FA4 will have improved viscosity stability.
