New Style Batteries

Here in the camping world we seem to still be stuck with the old lead acid batteries, 6 volt or 12 volt. With the development of new battery technologies is there any better powerfull and long lasting batteries out there or on the horizon?
  • I'm wondering what I'm going to be fixing if I have better batteries. I'm not even using AGM on my TC, and they seem to be fine for my uses. ;)

On my first laptop 10+ years ago I had 1 year battery warranty and on month 13 the battery would run for about 10% of original time.
Now I have 5 years old laptop capable of 3 hr of work on original battery.
AGM batteries cost much more, while reports say they die faster than flooded batteries.
There is video on youtube how a guy jumped his car from bank of AA batteries.
So technology exist, but I stick to older batteries for $50 that can last for 10 years

Unless you're routinely running an AGM deep cycle battery below 50%, you should be able to far more from them than a flooded battery. My boss has been running his for 12 years now. I have full expectation that I'll get the same on mine.
  • There are few folks successfully using LI batteries in their RV's. You need deep pockets and can not camp below -20 c (-4 f).

Hey guys, per the original poster's question, AGM batteries ARE Lead acid batteries.
Ok, SurfRam, did you include AGMs in your statement that we are stuck with the old lead acid batteries?
  • Hey guys, per the original poster's question, AGM batteries ARE Lead acid batteries. If the original poster wants new technology batteries and has a few thousand dollars to spend, Lithium battery technology is what he wants to look at. They ARE available for RVs.
  • I saw Tesla as one that can power a house and looked about the size of 1/2 of a small refrigerator that was hanging on a wall...

enormous amount of power and certainly looked "doable" for camping, even TC with slight loss of space or basement.

So, thankfully progress is being made, just hasn't hit the "Real Market" yet..

Here it is.. smaller than I thought.. so 5 yrs off??

  • I have heard that Tesla are working on extended life batteries for their very expensive cars....How that would affect the RV world?...Dont know
