New to Travel Trailers

Hello!

I'm looking into buying my 1st travel trailer and I'd like something no more than 20ft. I don't have a huge budget (10k) and I'm looking for something that can sleep 4 people.

So my concerns are that I have a few passengers that are on the larger side (300+ pounds) and I am looking for something more utilitarian. I'm more concerned with durability, longer-lasting, etc than I am luxury.

I'm very much new to this so please bear with me.

Thanks

Frank

    Good suggestion !
  • “I believe it's rated for 4000lb on the hitch.”

4000 pounds of hitch weight? Not likely. Learn the term definitions before you use the words.
  • As mentioned above, the tow vehicle's payload capacity is the limiting factor with a travel trailer. The weight of all passengers, cargo, and the tongue weight of the trailer should not exceed that limit.

The H3 is based on the Chevy Colorado pickup truck, and it's not the most capable tow vehicle around. Do you have the 5 cylinder, or the V8?

I dont think you will find nothing out there for 4-300lb plus people. Plus in the hummer that only has a 4500 tow rating...

    For two people yes...

You will need a bigger truck.

Not to offend but that would be my suggestion..

    335 tongue weight
    3415 dry weight
    GVW 4500 lbs
    cargo carry 1085 lbs

Bed ends hold about 1000 lbs

You will need a WD hitch...

  • 4000 tow rating maybe. That means your looking for a trailer under 2500 dry. At that your never going to find anything sturdy enough to allow a 300 pound person to sleep without breaking things. Trailers are just not built like that.

  • What tow vehicle do you have? With passengers on the large side, your payload may be the defining factor.

You might look at a hybrid trailer - the jay feather advertises an 1100lb capacity for the tent ends.

    Cart before the horse.

What do you have to tow with?

Specs of the tow vehicle please..

Need info like type of vehicle/make/model/yr, GVWR, unladen weight and/or available cargo weight of vehicle.

If 2008 and newer there will be a yellow cargo sticker on the drivers side door or drivers side door post..

Tongue of the trailer becomes "cargo" of the vehicle so it is extremely important to know just how much available cargo weight you have for the tongue after you subtract your passengers and gear that is put into the vehicle.

Tongue weight of trailer MUST be 10%-15% of the trailer weight to ensure stability of the entire rig.

So, we can calculate the max trailer you can safely tow by using the available cargo weight of the tow vehicle.

As far a $10K budget, that rules out anything new, you WILL be looking at USED trailers. The downside of that is you are at the mercy of what is for sale near you.

Also, if your vehicle is not equipped with hitch, 7 pin trailer connector and or brake controller, those WILL need to be added at extra cost.
  • So your TV will be carrying 1,200 of people? What does that leave for tongue weight, hitch, stuff etc?

Our TT box is 22 feet plus a slide for DW and me. Four at 300 pounds each in 20 feet? Oh boy.
  • OK sleeping arrangements for four people, 20' trailer and some are 300+ lbs.
Are these couples? can a dinette//bed and a sofa bed accomidate all four?
