New to TT and TVs - Budget truck for 5200 lbs max

Hitch Weight of TT = 484 lbs
GVWR of TT = 4450 lbs
Family of 4 in truck = ~600 lbs
Truck Cargo = ~150lbs
Total = 5200 lbs towing capacity

So I am looking at a modest TT (2018 Heartland Mallard M185) for my soon to be family of 4 consisting of 2 adults and 2 children under 5. I am looking for a towing vehicle that fits the bill and is around 10k (must have 4wd). I live at 8000ft and will be mostly towing around the mountains at altitude. This vehicle will be pretty much solely used for 3-season towing for camping on the weekends and driving around the mountains to trailheads for backpacking trips.

I am thinking just about any truck will do for such a lightweight TT.. have been looking at mid-2000s gas F150s with 150k or less miles. It looks like I will want a crew cab for room for family. I am new to towing and owning a truck so am looking for suggestions or pointers on reliable TVs and what to look for and/or avoid! Thanks for all your help!

I get that America has an obesity problem, but I think a half ton would probably suit OP's situation just fine unless the whole family is drinking gravy as a beverage at every meal.
  • 3/4 ton would make possible upgrading the trailer and carrying more fun stuff IMO. Your two kids under 5 don’t bring much now but soon...bikes, kayaks, skateboards etc.

  • I think that your good in what your looking for as far as a 1/2 ton truck. For the price you should have no problem finding one within that range. The GM has the 5.3 offering and has been very reliable to point. I know that dodge has the hemi and it has been good as well. The Ford 5.4 had some issues with cam phasers and spark plugs, but again google that up for further. Also look at the tundra but with the 5.7 engine, they seem very reliable and have plenty of power. Crew cab, the Chevy and Ford probably has the largest during those years.
