Good info so far. I have some specific experience about the 4Runner, but need to know the year and if it is v8 or v6.
My 2004 V8 Limited has a tow rating of 7300lbs with weight distribution hitch.
An example of the difference a WDH makes...
With wdh, my hitch load rating is 1095lbs. Without it is 730lbs.
Once you let us know which model 4Runner you are considering, more specific info can be provided.
FYI, I regularly tow in the 5k to 6.5k range. The steepest mountains mean as low as 45mph (unless I drive WOT and manually shift, which I don't usually do). Moderate grades and flat tows dead solid, about 2k rpms at 55mph.
Warning: 4Runner has a small profile and can be dramatically affected by a large wind profile of a trailer. We actually did much better this last trip with a canoe on the rack. I figure it worked as a nice wind deflecter.
