"...how much do I need to focus on weight distribution hitches and sway control."
With your truck, you will easily handle just about any TT in the 35 foot range or shorter.
I have a 3500 duly diesel and tow a 35.5 foot trailer. I have an Equal-i-zer weight distribution hitch system which works very nice with this truck and trailer combination. Once set up, hitching is very quick and easy, and if your trailer has a power tongue jack, it's even easier!
With a rear single wheel truck, you will want sway control. The Euqal-i-zer, the Reese Dual Cam, for example, have the built in sway control. No need to buy the extra friction say bar. Plan around $500 for a decent Weight Distribution hitch and then shop around for the best price.
FYI, the single floor plan and the lower profile are the 2 main reasons why we never went with a 5er, although I've had more than enough truck for years to pull a 5er, or even more!
You'll appreciate getting the bed of your pick-up truck back again too!
