New truck. looking for advice.

I just purchased a 2014 sierra with the 5.3 and 3.42 gears. I have a 9600lb towing capacity and 1500 payload. I just sold my old tiny camper and I'm looking to upgrade. Can anyone recommend a good size/make/model for this truck. I will be using it for work and pretty much live in it alone. Really want more living area than sleeping capacity. Would also like it to be 30'+ if possible.
  • I had the same truck with the same engine and gear ratio....Sorry to say it was easily the worst tow truck I ever owned. Second gear blowing its brains out towing a 5000 trailer over the mountains in Va and WVA. Might have been something wrong with my truck and I wish you much better luck, but it seems this engine combination was designed for empty fuel mileage figures and not for towing.
Sold it and went diesel.....More better!
  • I would look for a rear lounge TT. There are many 'lite-weight' models that should work fine. I like my Rockwood Signature and have great support from Forrest River.

If you will be living and traveling and in colder climates you may want to look at a Northwood Manufacturing - HERE
  • I'm on mobile and can't see it. What is it? And I pretty much will have nothing in my truck but me and gas. I have an aluminum tool box on it with small tools but its light enough I moved it from one truck to the other by hand. Wasn't heavy at all. Other than that just my clothes in the camper. And I guess food and stuff in there.

Your search ended just as fast as it began. See my rig below.
  • Based on info given, can't offer much much help. How many pounds of gear will you be loading into the truck cab and bed?
Loaded railer tongue weight capacity on then truck is going to run out long before you reach the pulling capacity of 9600 lbs.
The tongue on a loaded TT is going to weigh about 13 percent of the total trailer loaded weight.
As a general rule, stick with a travel trailer with a gvwr of under 6500 (loaded tongue weight 900 lbs) and you will remain within the limits of a half ton truck with manufacturers payload rating of 1500. Hitch will weight 100 lbs, gear in bed and stuff in truck plus any options/passengers will likely be another 500 lbs.
Any heavier than that and your Towing performance/enjoyment and safety factor will diminish.
  • I looked at some today. I stopped by a local dealer and they had a keystone passport 3180re and a 31re I liked. But seemed kinda heavy for my truck. Both are about 34'.
  • Hello Pavo:

There are some here that would have good recommendations but I believe you may want to do some homework and find some floor plans that complement your lifestyle. Everyone here on the forum camps in different ways and have differing likes. Your camping style and liking will be different from others.

I would go on line and look at the floor plans and even visit some dealers.

Sorry I cannot recommend any one trailer but this may be the most helpful advice I can give.

    Good luck in your endeavor
