I have some experience with the 6.5 and if built properly can be a reliable mule. As for expense, let's compare prices to parts for any current CR engine from any other brand. My 6.7 Dodge needed 2 injectors, 3 turbos, a valve body, and fuel rails sensor, all within 100k. If the dealer had changed those it would have over $10g parts and labor. And early 6.7 Fords had fuel system issues; how about a 5 figure repair bill just to fix a bad fuel injection system?
Also consider that every modern CR has about a 300k life span before overhaul, or about the same as most 6.5s I've read about. How much less is a 6.5 to rebuild than a D-Max, PSD or D-Max? Again, not looking to roll coal or make 600hp.
Opinions about practicality differ, but the fact this is all I can afford in my budget. This one is also old enough to avoid most of the pitfalls of the newer vehicles; still relatively old tech running it compared to the ton of nannies in the new trucks. While it sounds like a lot of money to dump into something like this, that cash will get me my perfect tow vehicle, without a car payment, and I can do it as time and money permit. At the very least I will have to drop very little money to make it a great family travel vehicle.
Point is, I can choose to just keep running the factory gear or go as crazy as I want. Consider people spend deep into 5 figure territory for a new one, then another $10g plus in mods. Even used 900 platform Burbs are still pushing $40g in my area, then possible repairs.
