It bothers me that we have become such a consumable society nobody sees value in anything anymore. Burbs have always been expensive, over $40g when this one was new. Now, it's derelict because it has some miles and age. A good Burb always has value. I don't like to throw something away just because; I may spend more to fix something than the monetary value, but it's not going to a landfill, either. My Burb may be ugly, have some age on her, and in need of a good cleaning, but she still has life left.
Keeping with those values, I will rebuild what I already have, and run it until we see what the future holds. A repower is not off the table, and may grab a salvage 6.5 to rebuild for the inevitable fuel price spike. As much as I would love to drop in one of several options, I really can't afford anything more than to keep what I have running for the time being.
One side item. The topic of more gears keeps popping up, and I keep thinking back to the GVO mechanical overdrive. More gears are always better. From my extensive research I seem to recall that it worked better in theory than practice; they were not as durable as claimed and were rather pricey. If that's the case it might be more cost effective to grab a salvage 6L and get it to work.
