Surge protectors are nice to have. I have one in my MH. Hoever, Doubt that would have prevented the problem. Keep in mind millions of RVs were built and never used surge protectors over the years. I have RVd since the 60s and have my first surge protector in 2013. So over 50 years never had a problem. Assuming you turn off power before plugging in and your home is wired correctly doubt that was the problem. I agree with a previous post. Batteries were probably almost dead, being a used 08 RV could even had a shorted cell, just looking at possibilities. Probably over loaded your converter attempting to charge the batteries. I would check out converter and batteries. I would pull batteries and put then on a charger separately and check cells. If you have 2 batteries in parallel and one with a bad cell it may not be quite so obvious one is bad except to a knowledgable electrical person. Haven't found any of those people at any RV dealers I've been at. JMHO
