Newbie Curious About Owner's Experiences with Aliners

Not only am I new to trailers of any kind, I'm also new to posting on discussion boards. I mistakenly posted this under Travel Trailers first and should have put it here. Oops!

I was tent camping at Molas Lake in Colorado last summer and saw an Aliner in the campground. It caught my eye as the perfect solution for me and my two dogs. I'm looking for something safer than a tent that I can take up dirt and gravel roads and camp in dispersed areas, as well as in established campgrounds. I'd like to be able to lock it up and leave it for the day as I head up to the mountains on day hikes with my pups. As a former backpacker and tent camper, the Aliner seemed like a good fit: small, light, low profile, with hard sides, and not too many bells and whistles.

Can anyone who has owned an Aliner tell me about their experiences with this brand and its products? I'm considering either the Classic or Ranger 12. What are their pluses and minuses?

Thanks!

I have an Aliner scout and have camped in 12 states so far. Works very well. Keep in mind you are limited by your tow vehicle for towing capacity and tongue weight. I went with the scout to avoid tongue weight from propane.

Thanks for this info. What you say makes perfect sense. I have a late model Jeep Grand Cherokee. It should be able to tow a Classic or Ranger 12, but I'll definitely verify that!

While they are not heavily built the fit and finish was good and we had no leaks. Raising or lowering the unit took all of about one minute or less and frequently drew a crowd with requests such as: "Can you do that again?" to which I was always happy to comply...

    Hope this helps.

Being able to move it around by the handles is a plus as is "no leaks." I keep the crowd factor in mind. ;-) Thanks for your input.

He does lock it when he goes out on excursions but keep in mind that ALL campers are easily broke into if someone wants to get in them. personally, I haven't had any issues with my 27' regular camper. I did put Combi-Cam locks (http://www.combi-cam.com/) on my storage doors since all of the standard locks are keyed alike but those can be broken into as well. It just gives me a little extra piece of mind. Other than that, he loves it but he does plan on upgrading to a small regular camper that has a bathroom sometime in the future.

Good to know how easy it is to break into campers. That makes sense. Thanks!
  • I have a good friend that has an A-Liner. He bought it used a year ago and we camped with him and his wife a few times last summer. The only complaints that he has are that there is little head room because of the "A" shape (he's 6'2") and it has no waste tanks. He has to place a bucket under the camper where the drain is for the sink. I've never owned a Pop-Up so this may be true of all of them. Not really a complaint but he says the heater wakes him up sometimes but I'm sure this is true in all small campers because you're so close to it. On the plus side, he's mentioned to me that it tows very nice with his Chevy Traverse, it has no leaks, it has a Fantastic Fan (I don't know if these come standard or the previous owner installed it)and setting it up is very easy. • We had an A Liner Classic for a year and loved it. I bought it hoping to hook my bride on camping and it worked very well. It only weighed 995# and towed like a dream behind by V-6 F-150. The peak head room was over 8' and the bed in the rear was bigger than a queen. It stored easily in our garage and one person could grab the handles and push it around.

The galley was somewhat limited, small AC/LP frig/freezer but it worked just fine. The sink and hand pump were small as was the fresh water tank, ten gallons or less as I recall. the two burner stove could be used inside or out and most of the time I cooked outdoors with it as there was an LP connection and mounting bracket on the curbside of the trailer.

It had a side mounted air conditioner and I added a small Microwave. It came with a new (unused) portapotti that stored under the dinette which we never used. It had a single propane tank and battery which were more than enough.

While they are not heavily built the fit and finish was good and we had no leaks. Raising or lowering the unit took all of about one minute or less and frequently drew a crowd with requests such as: "Can you do that again?" to which I was always happy to comply.

Despite being a couple of years old (a 2008), it was in "as new" condition. I paid $7,000 and a year later when I put it up on Craigslist the phone rang off the hook. An out of state buyer sent his buddy to look at it and bought it after seeing a couple of digital pics and getting a very positive report from his friend.... for $6,700.

The only reason I sold was that I had successfully hooked my bride on camping and we were ready for a few more amenities, she really wanted a rig with a full bathroom and I wanted a serious kitchen. I had traded the V-6 F-150 for an identical 5.4L V-8 SCab so we went with a 22' travel trailer that we kept for 5 years.

    Hope this helps.

Yes, I have seen that post because I wrote it and placed it in the wrong forum. That's why I reposted it here.

I have done an Aliner search on this website. It was somewhat useful but not specific enough. I don't have the time to sift through all the vague references and thought this might cut to the chase more quickly. That's what led me to creating my own post.

Thanks for your thought, though, I appreciate them.
