This is the way my insurance agent (Liberty Mutual) explained it to me:
The truck's insurance policy covers liability owed towards other parties during a wreck no matter what you haul or tow.
The trucks insurance covers the damage to the truck but it is up to the individual insurance company and policy as to whether the trucks insurance will also cover damage done to the truck camper when on the truck (or even off the truck in some cases). Some do, some don't, don't get caught not knowing though. After the damage is done is a bad time to learn the trucks insurance didn't cover the camper. Check with your agent for specifics.
If the truck insurance doesn't cover the camper it is up to a home owners policy or some other insurance policy to cover the camper when on the truck or apart from the truck, i.e. stored at home or left in a campground and a tree falls on it. Make sure to put a rider on your homeowners policy if that is the route you go for camper coverage or they may not pay out enough to cover the entire loss. Some of these campers are very expensive.
My homeowners insurance is through is a different company than my auto/RV policy. It would cover damage if my camper was sitting on my property but the deductible was too high to satisfy the loan requirement on the TC.
Since I have a large loan on my camper I can't afford not to have it covered. Therefore I purchased a separate policy for full coverage (comprehensive & collision) on my camper. Now it is covered if it's damaged while on the truck. I'm double covered at home for damages, theft or break in. It is also covered where ever I may leave it parked alone out in the world by it's own (inexpensive) policy. And the deductible limit is satisfied for my TC loan without increasing my homeowners insurance to lower deductibles.
My auto/RV policy is $99 per month. That includes full coverage on a 2014 Northern Lite TC, full coverage on a 2005 Ram 3500 CTD DRW 4x4, full coverage on a street legal 2014 Honda 250 motorcycle, & minimum liability on a 1995 Honda Accord with 310,000 miles. That's $99 per month for all 4, sorry I don't know the exact individual breakdown. I sleep good at night knowing my camper is covered as I paid (borrowed really) more for it than the value of all my other vehicles combined.
Bottom line, ask your insurance company what is covered and when. Shop around for the best coverage and price. Good luck.
