I have a 2012 diesel with 95,000 miles on it. Granted, the BMW 3 liter engine isn't what you'll get in a RAM or DuraMAX, but it does qualify as state of the art for 2012. I have had very few issues with it. The glow plug controller went bad at around 80,000 miles, but otherwise it's been no more expensive to maintain than our 2001 VW Jetta diesel, which lacks all the DEF and DPF stuff that seems to trouble folks. This model has had a few issues with the DEF system, which mostly have been covered under warranty. _I_, however, have not had those issues at all.
Would I buy another, newer diesel? You bet! Can't beat the pull, especially up in the mountains where the average (non-turbo) gasser gets weak due to the thinner air.
