Had a 2007 (first year of) 6.7 Cummins....engine was 100% rock solid, except for the beta bolt on emissions equipment and revised turbo - mostly all nagging garbage, and lots of Check Engine Lights, but most issues were covered by the factory 100k warranty...At 133k mi I traded for a new 2016 6.7 with DEF...
My initial perceptions were found to be defunct - DEF (basically cow pi$$) is waaaaaaay better because most of the NOx is treated ‘chemically’ (versus mechanically) way back in the exhaust track rather than underneath the hood...Exhaust and turbo temps are also lower due to decreased reliance on the turbo-clogging EGR, and mileage is ‘theoretically’ better too, due to far fewer DPF (Diesel particulate filter) fuel enrichment cycles and regenerations, but in practice, MPG about exactly equivalent, due to more HP (25) and much more (150#) torque...
In my view DEF solves a lot of nagging issues and nowadays is the only way to go...
