The older stuff is so much better mainly because there is no common rail fuel system with injectors costing 10 times what mine cost. The common rail fuel system, when an injector goes it pours fuel under constant pressure into the cylinder having a greater chance for complete engine rebuild. EGR system has also been known to pour fuel into the cylinders causing major damage.
Price of the second gen Dodges continue to climb with one other reason being the injection pump is one of the easiest to replace. Owners I know that do a religious upkeep are approaching 400 and 500 K miles W/O any major expense. With turbos, injectors and VP44 easy to replace. A rebuilt Turbo is around 4-5 hundred bucks, replaced in a couple hours. Injectors I have only done on a 12 valve are easy enough on the 24 valve and cost around $400 as well. Over all are the best ones around IMHO. Esp. if you have the transmissions bullet proofed by a proper rebuilder. And you don't let just anyone work on it... do it yourself and learn how. It very satisfying.
You do have to rewire some grounds to reduce the A/C ripple causing a slow death to the circuit boards and run 2 stroke oil in the fuel to bring the tested cylinder score values back to the proper level.
