Electronic diesel injection is used by Ford for last 20 years.
The oil activated injectors are equivalent of common rail and when they fail, the part for 20 yo truck is not cheap and you need 8 of them.
Unfortunately there is no easy answer.
I used to drive 1984 VW diesel pickup. I believe it is still on the road as lot of people appreciate 40 mpg, but for me the 44 HP "beast" was too annoying when I had to turn AC off for better acceleration.
Than nobody mention the environmental aspect.
Older diesels poison everybody around, newer diesels in Los Angeles area exhaust cleaner air than they inhale.
