Well... I met opinions on the net, that breathing the exhaust from modern diesel tailpipe is safer than breathing air directly from Los Angeles streets.

I worked for Cummins all my life. Our chief engineer, responsible for the engines that go in over the road trucks, said that the exhaust on trucks with particulate filters have less particulates than found in the air in many cities. Sort of the same as what you heard.
