What nobody's mentioned is that in the last 14 years, the Big Three truck manufacturers have been in an all-out ratings war. Who can tow more? Who can haul more? Tow ratings and payload ratings have been inflating year after year, much of the time with only cosmetic changes to the trucks.
The point is, the meaning of the ratings has changed. That 7500lb tow rating on your 14 year old truck would be a 12,500lb rating today, with no changes to the truck.

Today we have 6 and 8 speed automatics, tow haul modes, engine braking, integrated trailer braking with sway control, V6 twin turbo gas engines that outperform large V8s, direct injection gas engines, diesel engines putting out 900 lbs torque from the factory and a host of other technological changes. There is no comparison between todays trucks and those 14 years old.
There is almost no comparison from the trucks of just 5 years ago in many cases as well!
