Newer F150 vs. old F250.

One of my good friend bought a 2013 F150. I was surprised on how much it was rated to tow compare to mine. My is rated to tow 7500 pounds and his was something like 10,000 pounds. So, I looked up for more information n new F150. Really, those trucks have more payload than mine and tow heck a lot better with smaller engine? Makes me wonder if I should get a new one since it can tow and carry more payload than mine and get a lot better MPG. I only get 8 mpg and he gets 14 MPG with his 5.0 V8. I guess lighter truck and 6 speed transmission helps.

What should I consider before looking at it?

The one with 2.7 EcoBoost has 8,500 pound for towing and 2,250 pounds for payload. More than what I need since my TT has GVWR of 7650 pounds and about 800 pounds of tongue weight. That leaves 1,450 pounds for passengers, bicycles, etc.

The 2.7 in Supercrew 4wd configuration (short box only) has a RAWR of 3300 or 3800 lbs. The back of the truck empty weighs 2000 lbs. So be sure you look at more than just payload.

Personally, if you've got the itch for a new truck, I'd keep what you've got and save up to pay for the difference to get into a diesel model.
  • I tow the same GVWR as you. Go for the 3.5 EB if you get one. It tows that weight as easy as you could expect. It's a great match.

Colo Native, I keep hearing folks speak of the F250 diesels being priced similar to the 150 EB...I didn't see that when I shopped? I paid $32k out the door for mine. Are yawl getting the 250 diesel, CC, 4x4 close to that price?
  • No way anyone gets 14mpg towing 60+ sq ft of frontal area at 60mph. I don't think a diesel would, maybe downhill.

My 2003 F-150 5.3L 3.73 had similar tow rating as your truck. You have the snowplow edition F250 from that era, not the towing beast say of the V10/4.30.

Don't replace your truck until it doesn't meet your needs. When you are ready, getting into anything with 6+ spd transmission will greatly improve acceleration. Unloaded ride and fuel costs will in improved in a half ton than 3/4+ ton.
  • When I bought my 2015 PSD 250 it wasn't must different in price to a 150 with eco boost and the bigger engine, but the 250 tows more and I am getting around 15 mpg not towing
