Nissan Armada Tow

I have a Nissan Armada....we bought the truck because of its ability to tow 9100Lbs. My wife as her Eyes set on a few Jayco trailers the range in weight from 7700Lbs to 8400Lbs. I have my eye on a Keystone bullet Premier that is 6400Lbs. (all weights are Dry unloaded)My question is not which is better but my wife wants to know if you can pull the other trailers safely. She sees 9100Lbs towing and thinks we can pull an 8300Lbs trailer as long as we dont' fill the water tanks.

the Armada has the following specs.

GVWR 7150LBS
rear axel 4300LBS
max tongue 910LBS
CVWR 15100LBS
  • Thanks for the fast responses everyone. The sticker in the door of the Armada says that the cargo and passenger weight can't be over 1433Lbs. all other specs I have in my first post is there any other information needed. I think the 6400Lbs trailer loaded to no more than 8000Lbs that is the max for the trailer. I think that about 95% of the time I feel I can keep the loaded weight of the trailer around 7400Lbs realistically. that is 1000Lbs of gear is that unrealistic?

    Thanks Guys
  • Short answer, I would not recommend Towing any one of those with the Armada. You will run out of payload with the Armada long before you exceed the lbs it is rated to pull. Tongue weight on a TT will be 13% or so of its loaded weight. A 6500 lb TT once loaded will weigh about 8000 lbs meaning it will have about a 1000 lb tongue weight. Add 100 lb hitch, 300lbs gear in the bed, 500 lbs passengers in the cab, the truck will be overloaded and you will likely not have a desirable Towing experience.
I would stick to a trailer fully loaded not exceeding 6500 with your truck.
Find out what the payload rating is for your truck (my guess is around 1200 but the sticker in the door jamb should tell you gvwr) and take it to a scale. You will then be able to determine how many pounds you can safely add to the truck including the trailer tongue, hitch, passengers, fuel, gear, etc.
For any of the trailers you mentioned, I would recommend a 3/4 ton truck and a good WD hitch set up.

The problem with the Armada is not the power, it's the limited payload, around 1,000 lbs or so. The trailers you are looking at will take most of your available payload leaving no room for people. Stick with something around 5-6,500 lbs fully loaded.
