Nissan using an American diesel and not building their own?
Who knows? Marketing? Availability? Why did Dodge use Cummins when they started putting diesels in pickups back in 1989 instead of developing their own? Why is Ram using an Italian diesel in their 1500 instead of an American developed diesel? Nissan sells many diesel vehicles worldwide powered by their engines they developed in-house.
Maybe the answer is that it's a smaller world these days, and virtually every vehicle on the road has parts and components that were designed, engineered and manufactured from all around the world. Same with vehicles themselves. My VW was built in Mexico, as were many Chrysler vehicles. Nothing is designed and built exclusively in the US anymore, using all US components. Guess who builds Ram's premium HD pickup transmission? Aisin, a Japanese company with Toyota as a major owner and parent company.
