Hey, just think of this as an opportunity to buy an upgraded converter. The much more capable units aren't really that much more expensive if you already have to do a replacement, shelling out $30 more for a PD unit that will actually correctly charge your batteries seems like a good investment to me =)
I can't justify it on the current rig as we almost never boondocks due to tiny tanks, but if I had a bad converter I know I'd pay the extra couple bucks.
