Not sure what Ram was thinking with not having a fuel cap for diesel fuel, especially at a time when engines are more sensitive to water and dirt contaminates. It would be nice to even have a locking fuel cover to keep unwanted access to fuel and def openings.
I purchased a push in green cap that has an o-ring to help keep stuff out but does nothing for security.
There are two spring-loaded flaps in the fuel fill - one at the opening, another a short distance down the fill tube. There is a "vent" in between them that is designed to let any contaminants fall out, if they make it past the first flap.
When you put a fill nozzle in, it goes down far enough to open both flaps. That's why there is a white funnel under the passenger seat - if you need to fill from a fuel can the end of the nozzle won't reach far enough down.
Then the factory fuel door has a rubber gasket that meets up with the body around the fill opening, and there is a cover over the hinge too.
As some have mentioned, there are some cap options at Geno's Garage if you want to add them.
....and again, if one just want's to put a rubber cap over the opening for about $2.50 or so, you can also go that route.
Door to fuel filler and DEF filler necks seals well, I've never gotten any snow, rain or debris inside the compartment where these two filler necks are located....Never been an issue in the 2years, 30,000 miles that I've owned the truck, no problems putting fuel or DEF in and again, no problem with rain or snow getting inside the compartment...seems like a non issue to me.....One would really have to go out of their way to get contaminants in their fuel or DEF
I've also NEVER had anyone try to steal fuel from my diesel trucks or any gasser I've ever owned, but have only been driving since 66', so I guess it could happen at any moment....
