No Heat - Regulator ?

Trailer is in the driveway, so we are not freezing.
Had the heat on today while getting things ready, got really toasty. I left the trailer and when i returned the heat was off. After a lot of trouble shooting found i had lost gas in the cook top which i had running earlier. The left right switch/regulator for the tanks is showing red even though the tanks are full. I disconnected the trailer side of the regulator and turned the tank on, no hissing, gas is not passing through. Is my problem solved, the regulator has failed closed ? Would it fail while running ? Any thoughts ?

  • Weird. How does your switch between the 2 tanks work? Is it a manual valve like mine or a automatic one? It's about the only thing you haven't worked on yet.

How cold is it up there? Could you have ice in the regulator/switch or someplace else? Sometimes those tanks get moisture in them that can turn into ice and plug up the system. But, it would have to be below freezing outside.
  • So i will pick new pig tails up this morning, and report. Hope it fixes things or may postpone tomorrows departure.

I switched tank sides/pig tails bad tank ran now the stove, but will not run the heat.Or will run heat but not stove. There are still times when the stove 2/3 burners will run and the new regulator indicator will be red. Seems gas volume is just not enough to support more than 2 burners and the heat on the good side. Bad side lucky if it can support one burner.

Filled canisters at Costco, anyone with issues ?
  • Ok, just got a new regulator and installed it.
Seems like problems are persisting. One tank will not run heat, regulator still goes red. Other tank will run heat and burner on the stove at the same time. If i try to run more than 1/2 burners while heat is on it will kick the heat off and just the fan will run. odd eh ?

Yep starting to think i should have gotten new pigtails now.

We have always camped in the south/east US. in the summer, feeling silly being Canadian and just discovering my heating system now. Ha!
  • Regulator and/or pigtail hoses.

Pigtails have an excess flow shut-off that can fail

Regulator has 2 vents. Small hole on high pressure side and then the larger screened vent on low pressure side. Soapy water sprayed on them will show bubbles if leaking.
Even if not leaking from vents regulators can just fail
  • Ok, update.
Tried slow gas prime, indicator remain red and stove would not flame up. Attached second bottle again slow primed, no green appeared but indicator went black/clear. This time cook top flamed up. Tried heat, and has now been running for an hour, and is warming the place as it did yesterday.

Problem - regulator indicator has gone red again yet heat and stove is still working. Not feeling heat is reliable for a trip.

    Thoughts ?
  • Yep bottles are full checked them on the BBQ and they are still heavy. Fact that failure happened after running for 30min+ was suspicious. I can't get the regulator to show green on either bottle. Does valved in mean open ?

    Thanks !
  • Are you sure the bottles are full?? Sounds like they went dry if it was working before.
  • I've always tried to reset by turning everything off then disconnecting and reconnecting the pigtails. Sometimes I also turn on a stove burner with the pigtails disconnected. After that I open the valve slowly like everyone has been saying.

I'm not saying my way is better or worse than Golden_HVAC, that's just the way I do it.
  • Hi,

Modern propane tanks are required to have excess flow valves installed on them. So if you exceed about 250,000 Btu's per hour will trip the valve, so will opening it to quickly.

Try this. Shut both valves, and make sure that everything is off inside the RV. Then turn on the valve slowly (passenger or drivers side does not matter). Then shut it off to make sure that the excess flow valve is re-set again with some propane pressure already in the low pressure regulator. After that, turn on the valve all the way, and it should be ready to work. Then you can turn on the other valve when you want to, and the switchover regulator should change everything automatically.

    Fred.
  • Are both cylinders valved IN?

Indicator shows RED when the in service cylinder goes empty...then it auto switches to other cylinder.
Turn lever to other cylinder and indicator will turn GREEN IF other cylinder is valved in.

Disconnected cylinders will not free flow propane...safety devices.
Cylinder has to be connected to pigtail to open the internal valve on cylinder fitting
And if connected to pigtail but disconnected at other end......the excess flow check valve inside the pigtail ACME nut will trip/close so no propane can flow.

If both cylinders are valved in service and both are full (or even one full)
Close the valve. Turn lever to cylinder you want to use
    Slowing valve cylinder IN.
    Indicator turn GREEN?

IF it does......light off stove top burners to get propane flow established and place a demand on Regulator.

Then check flames....steady, no decrease in size as you turn more on.

If indicator doesn't turn GREEN then pigtail or regulator could be at fault.
