No tow mirrors

So I bought a left over 2015 Ram 1500 with no tow mirrors, thinking I could readily upgrade them at my leisure. The dealer, after the fact of course, told me that can't be done due to various electronics in the mirrors. They specifically told me that if I replaced my power folding mirrors with the manual folding tow mirrors, I would get a CEL along with the related codes. Alas, power folding tow mirrors are not an option.

For now, I'm stuck with universal clip on mirrors, which will get their first test this weekend. Anybody know if there's a reasonably simple way to install good tow mirrors without wreaking havoc or affecting warranty?

  • RockAuto lists power, heated, trailer tow mirrors for 2015 Ram 1500, either paint to match or chrome for $160 to $200 respectively.

    RockAuto
  • Not cheap but says that they will work:
    AM Auto parts

Bought a pair of Chevy tow mirrors from them a little over 4 years ago and have had no problems.

Yes, if I have any complaints about them it's the smaller mirror. On the other hand they are far cheaper than trying to swap out for factory towing mirrors!
  • CIPA mirrors is what I used when I first started towing a TT. Used them for five years before we bought a new TV equipped with towing mirrors. They served the purpose without any problems. Granted, the glass is not as big as factory tow mirrors.
  • You want Cipa custom fit towing mirrors.

I have a set for my Sierra, and had them for a '95 'Burb that I used to tow with. A few minutes to put on, they look nice, and function great.

As much as I like Etrailer, you might check Amazon for their price. I got mine from there for $45.
  • Get a pair of McKesh mirrors
I towed with them for years, they work well, easy on/off, and never damaged the truck.

IMHO they also work better and look better than add-ons to the factory mirrors. Don't need them any more since the current truck has serious mirrors.
  • I would research with another dealer. Try to find the biggest baddest busiest one in town. My guess is that if you replace the mirrors, they can actually re-flash the modules in the vehicle to accommodate for the new ones.

Also talk with some sales folks. Sometimes people want the big truck, but won't buy it due to the "tow mirrors". They may actually be willing to have the service dept do a swap for both of you.

In any case, it can't hurt to ask. Most of these vehicles are customisable, but only if your order them and wait. The dealers just get ones with certain features and then talk you into to something "close enough" because they want to make the sale that day.
  • No. I bought a Ram without the fold out mirrors also. I searched and searched and haven't found any that will work and still allow the power mirror option. I bet you don't have a puddle light on your mirror or turn signal.

Have you checked with other forums online? I know for the HD folks, they've swapped different types of mirrors (but it was a much more involved job). Basically, on top of swapping mirrors out, they had to change the mirror control module so that the right functions worked. I'm unsure if they had to flash the BCM as well though. Might try doing more research beyond RV.net.
